Trials have come and gone and a final squad of thirty-two (32) athletes took the pines at the Central Coast Adventist School to start a new program in one of the organizations founding sports.

The Central Coast Academy of Sport ClubsNSW Basketball Program has for years been one of the leading basketball programs within the regional Academies. The program continues to provide a stepping stone for athletes wanting to reach higher order honours in the sport and the CCAS squads are always extremely competitive at the annual ClubsNSW Academy Games.

Basketball is a program that has seen many athletes reach higher honours, the most current, Matt Kenyon taking his place with the Brisbane Bullets in the Australian NBL. Kenyon just recently played the Phoenix Suns (NBA) in an NBA trail event in Phoenix, not bad for a young man only a few years ago was wearing the Central Coast Academy of Sport basketball uniform.

Kenyon provides a very current example of how progression in sport can and does work, just four years ago Matt was a keen participant in the ClubsNSW Basketball Program and a former winner of the Basketball Athlete of the Year Award in 2013.

The ClubsNSW Basketball Program remains an integral step in the Basketball NSW pathway. One significant change to previous years is Basketball NSW wanting those athletes in the State Performance Plan (SPP) to be ineligible for inclusion in the Developing Athlete Program (DAP). This change to qualification will be closely watched and an assessment made on the positives and negatives at program end.

Ian Robilliard the CCAS Managing Director and a volunteer coach in the ClubsNSW Basketball Program said of the recent intake of athletes: “The Central Coast Academy of Sport ClubsNSW Basketball Program is extremely well supported by a very strong coaching group. This year saw additions to the coaching ranks and it is really pleasing to see the quality in the coaching ranks continue its upward path. I know the Coaches had an extremely difficult time in finalising the squads. The trial process was extremely competitive and those fortunate to be selected should feel very privileged to be a part of a highly competitive group. Will Granger will again lead the program as the Head Coach and his enthusiasm for this years group was very noticeable with the squads he will oversee. Will has assembled a really strong support staff so all indicators point to this program being a very good one, it will be great to watch how these athletes perform throughout the program.”
